App development cost in 2026. Honest ranges, and what actually moves the price.

App development cost ranges from about $15,000 for a simple app to $500,000 or more for a complex one, based on what US and UK agencies publish in 2026. Where your app lands depends mostly on the number of features, whether users sign in, and how many systems it talks to. Here are the numbers, what drives them, and how to keep them down.

The ranges

Mobile app development cost by complexity

We read the cost guides that rank on Google for "app development cost" in September 2026, from development agencies and software vendors. Their ranges overlap but do not match. The table below shows the span across those published figures. It covers design and development of the app itself. Ongoing costs come on top and are listed further down.

Published app development cost ranges, 2026
App typeExamplePublished rangeTypical timeline
Simple appFew screens, no accounts, content in the app$15,000-$100,0003-6 months
Mid-complexity appUser accounts, subscriptions, a few integrations$40,000-$200,0006-9 months
Complex appMultiple roles, payments, custom backend, admin panel$100,000-$500,000+9-12+ months
Enterprise platformSeveral apps, real-time data, compliance, many systems$250,000-$1M+12-18 months

Why the wide spread? Some guides price an offshore team, others a US agency. Some count design and project management, others only coding hours. When you compare quotes, always ask what is included.

iOS

iOS app development cost

Building for iPhone only is the most common way to start, and usually the cheapest way to reach paying users. iPhone users are also more likely to pay for apps and subscriptions. Published iOS-specific ranges look like this:

Published iOS app development cost
ComplexityPublished range (iOS only)
Simple$25,000-$60,000
Mid-level$60,000-$150,000
Complex$150,000-$350,000

Cross-platform frameworks like Flutter or React Native are often quoted as 20% to 40% cheaper than two separate native apps. That saving applies when you need both platforms. For iOS alone, native is rarely more expensive, and it gives you the best performance and new iOS features on day one. We compare the options on our native iOS app development page.

Hourly rates

App developer hourly rates by region

Location is the second biggest lever after scope. These are the ranges published for 2026 by agencies and vendors that rank for app cost searches.

Published mobile developer hourly rates, 2026
RegionPublished hourly range
United States$50-$200
Canada$45-$180
United Kingdom$45-$170
Europe (general)$35-$55
Poland$25-$100
Ukraine$20-$90
India$10-$90

A low rate is not the same as a low price. A team that has shipped many apps through App Review makes fewer detours, and fewer hours at a higher rate often beats many hours at a low one. Price drivers

Six things that set the price. And where you can save.

  1. Number of features

The single biggest factor. Every screen, flow and edge case has to be designed, built and tested. An app with one core experience costs a fraction of an app with ten.

  2. Accounts and user data

As soon as users need to sign in, save data or see each other's content, the app needs a backend, security and ongoing operations. That alone can double the budget.

  3. Integrations

Payments, subscriptions, maps, calendars, third-party APIs, your CRM. Each integration is work in itself, and some need maintenance whenever the third party changes something.

  4. Platforms

iOS and Android at once means either two native apps or a cross-platform build with trade-offs. Many teams launch on iOS first, prove the idea and add Android later.

  5. Design ambition

Custom design with bespoke animation and polish costs more than standard components. It is also often what decides whether users stay after day one.

  6. Who builds it

Hourly rates vary by a factor of ten between an offshore freelancer and a US agency. Rate alone says little: an experienced team often needs far fewer hours.

After launch

What the app costs once it is live

Most people only budget for the build. But an app is a product that has to be kept alive, and some costs come back every year.

Ongoing app costs
ItemCostNote
Apple Developer Program$99 per yearRequired to publish on the App Store
Google Play developer account$25 one-timeOnly if you ship on Android
Apple commission15% or 30%15% in the Small Business Program (under $1M a year) and on subscriptions after year one; 30% otherwise
Maintenance and updates15-25% of build cost per yearNew iOS every fall, new devices, new App Store requirements
Backend and hosting$20-$5,000+ per monthOnly if the app has accounts or shared data; grows with users
MarketingFrom $0App Store Optimization is free traffic. Ads and creators cost money
Apple and Google fees as published under their standard terms. Maintenance range from published agency guides, September 2026.

The last row is the one most often forgotten. An app nobody finds makes no money. That is why App Store Optimization and a plan for the first users belong in the budget from day one.

Spend less

How to get the most app for the money

Start with one feature that is great

The cheapest app is the one that does one thing very well. Launch it, watch what users actually do, and build from there. That is how our own apps were built. We explain the approach on our MVP development page.

Start on iOS

Launching on one platform saves you a second build until the idea is proven. In many markets, iPhone users are also the ones most likely to pay.

Test the idea before anyone writes code

A clickable prototype shows whether people understand and want the app. It is cheap compared to building the wrong app to completion.

Plan distribution from day one

Who will download the app, and how will they find it? App Store keywords, a website that ranks on Google, TikTok or creators. The answer affects both design and features.

No price list

Why you get an estimate, not a starting price

A "from $10,000" says nothing about what your app will cost. We would rather hear the idea first: who it is for, what the first version must do, and how it will find its users. Then you get a concrete estimate and an honest answer on whether it is worth the money. Sometimes the answer is to start smaller than you planned.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make an app?

Published agency pricing in 2026 puts a simple app at roughly $15,000 to $100,000, a mid-complexity app at $40,000 to $200,000 and a complex app at $100,000 to $500,000 or more. Where yours lands depends mostly on features, accounts and integrations.

How much does iOS app development cost?

Published iOS-specific ranges run from about $25,000 to $60,000 for a simple app, $60,000 to $150,000 for mid-level and $150,000 to $350,000 for complex apps. Building for iOS only is usually cheaper than building for iOS and Android at the same time.

What does Apple charge to have an app in the App Store?

The Apple Developer Program costs $99 per year. Under the standard terms Apple takes 30% of paid apps and in-app purchases, or 15% for developers in the App Store Small Business Program (under $1 million in yearly proceeds) and for subscriptions after their first year.

How much does app maintenance cost per year?

Published guides consistently recommend budgeting 15% to 25% of the original build cost per year for updates, bug fixes and new iOS versions, plus hosting if the app has a backend. See our app maintenance services.

Can I build an app for less?

Yes, by building less. Ship the one feature that makes the app worth downloading, launch it, and let real usage decide what comes next. An MVP is both cheaper and safer than building everything at once.

Why don't you publish your own prices?

Because two apps rarely cost the same. We would rather hear about your idea and give you a concrete estimate than publish a "from" price that does not fit your project.
