Our own app for one of the biggest everyday problems today: the phone that steals the hours

Off the Hook is an iPhone app for people who want to keep their friends, messages and posts on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok, but not Reels, Explore and the endless scroll. The app shows a calm version of social media without the feeds, keeps the real apps locked and lets a personal plan handle the rest. Lumi, the app's AI coach, helps with the plan and is there when the urge hits. Off the Hook is our own product, and we built all of it ourselves: product, app, AI, brand, website and SEO in 16 languages.

The problem

A problem nearly everyone struggles with, every single day

Almost everyone knows it: you pick up your phone to answer a friend, and an hour later you are still scrolling. 70% of Americans under 30 say they spend too much time on their phone (Pew Research Center, 2026). In Denmark, 28% of people in their twenties spend more than six hours a day on screens in their free time, and almost half of them have dropped a hobby to spend more time on screens (Statistics Denmark, 2026). This is not about willpower. On the other side sit thousands of engineers, an ad machine worth billions and an algorithm that learns you a little better with every swipe. It was never a fair fight.

Why it fails

The usual fixes throw out the good with the bad

In the same US survey, 45% tried to cut back in the last year, but only one in four of them say it really worked. That is no surprise. Screen Time limits can be ignored with one tap. Blocker apps lock the whole app, so you lose your friends' messages too. A dumbphone takes everything: the group chat, the photos and the invite for Friday. People don't want to get away from their friends. They want to get away from the part that was built to keep them hooked.

The angle

Keep your friends. Lose the Reels.

The angle became Slow Social: everything social stays, the rabbit hole goes. In Off the Hook you see your friends' posts, stories and messages in a calm version, while Reels, Explore, For You, Spotlight and the algorithmic suggestions are gone. Once you have seen what is new from the people you follow, it stops. The name rests on a pun that runs through everything: They call them Reels for a reason. A reel is the thing on a fishing rod that pulls the fish in. Off the Hook takes the reel away and gets you off the hook.

Three iPhones showing Off the Hook: a 5-minute break from work time, a conversation with Lumi about the urge to scroll and today's plan with football, dinner at Mum's and reading instead of Instagram

The app

The real app stays locked. Infinite scroll costs a break.

The app is built on Apple's Screen Time technology, so Instagram, TikTok and the rest are locked on the phone, and a break of 5 to 30 minutes opens them. Then everything locks again by itself. Your day comes in blocks from a personal plan, such as work time, evenings and a time when your phone goes to bed before you. You choose how strict it should be. On Medium and Hard, anything that loosens the plan only starts tomorrow, so there is no negotiating at 1 am. And when the urge hits, there is one button for it that brings help instead of guilt.

The Lumi section on offthehook.app: a conversation where Lumi suggests adding football on Tuesday and Thursday to the plan, with an Approve card

Lumi

An AI coach that knows your week and never shames you

You don't manage a plan. You talk to Lumi. Say you have started football on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Lumi suggests a change to the plan as a card you approve. Lumi can read your calendar if you allow it and suggests, for example, a focus block before an exam. When the urge hits, Lumi answers calmly and personally, links it to what you said you wanted more time for and suggests one concrete thing. Lumi suggests, the code enforces: nothing changes without your yes, and every rule about when a change applies lives in the app, never in an AI answer.

The journey

Ten weeks to a new normal

Habit research suggests it takes about 66 days on average for a new habit to stick. So Off the Hook is built as a ten-week journey in three phases: weaning off, building and a new normal. Each week has its own line that explains what is going on in your head, for example that the first weeks often feel restless and boring because the brain is adjusting to less constant stimulation. After ten weeks you pick a new chapter with Lumi, such as a new habit or a new interest for the time you got back.

Privacy

Built so we can't see what you do

You log in directly with Instagram and the other platforms inside the app. We never store passwords, and neither cookies nor content from your feed are ever sent to us. Apple's Screen Time system is anonymous, so the app can lock an app without knowing which one it is. The rules for what gets removed from the feed come from our server, so we can fix them the same day Instagram changes something, without waiting for App Store review. Apple has approved the app for Family Controls, the same access parental control apps get.

Website

A website that feels like the app

offthehook.app shares the star sky, the colours and the planet Lumi with the app, so going from website to app feels like one product. The page tells the story with scenes that hold still while something happens: words that light up, numbers that count, and a conversation with Lumi that writes itself. It has one goal: the waitlist before launch. It scores 100/100 in Lighthouse on all four measures on the live domain, has a calm version for people who turned motion off, and uses no cookies.

Three SEO pages from offthehook.app side by side: Dumbphone in Danish, How to stop doomscrolling in English and Bildschirmzeit in German

SEO

138 pages in 16 languages, written from each country's own searches

Before the app is in the App Store, offthehook.app has 120 guides and 16 front pages in 16 languages, from Danish, German and Japanese to Turkish and Indonesian. Every page is written from the country's own keywords, Google's top 10 and the questions people actually ask, such as screen time and dumbphones in Denmark, Bildschirmzeit in Germany and Instagram without Reels in English. Apple's and Instagram's menu names were looked up on each language's own help pages, so a Screen Time guide uses the words on the reader's phone. These are not translations of an English template but pages written for each market, with a source for every number.

App Store

Screenshots in the same world as everything else

The App Store images are built as one continuous star sky that runs through every screen, with real screens from the app and the same colours and type as the website and the app. The copy is written for each language, not translated word for word. We do ASO with the same method as for our own apps: the keywords Off the Hook can realistically rank for, based on difficulty weighed against search volume in each country.

Next

Waitlist now, App Store soon

Off the Hook is coming to iPhone in 16 to 20 languages, and the waitlist is open at offthehook.app. The foundation is in place: a product that solves a problem almost everyone knows, a brand that holds together from the App Store to the website, and 138 pages working for the app from day one. We will update this case with numbers when the first rankings and users come in.
